Bologna Football Club was founded in 1909 and has competed in the Italian football league system since then. The club first played in the regional divisions before being promoted to Serie C1 in 1933. In 1957, Bologna reached the Coppa Italia final but lost to Roma. The club then achieved promotion to Serie A for the first time in their history in 1964 and competed in the top division until 1996.
