Introduction to Genoa CFC

Genoa Cricket and Football Club, commonly referred to as Genoa, is an Italian professional football club based in Genoa, Liguria. They compete in Serie A, the top tier of Italian football. The club has won nine league titles, seven Coppa Italias, one Supercoppa Italiana, and participated in three UEFA Champions League campaigns. Founded in 1893 as Genoa Cricket & Athletic Club, they are Italy’s oldest football team currently active. As of 2019-20, they are also the oldest active club in Serie A.

The team’s first ever official match was played on 3 April 1893 against local rivals Juventus Palermo. Genoa won the match 1-0 with a solitary goal from Andrea Doria. In their second season in existence, the Rossoblu finished as runners up in Serie A behind champions Internazionale.

During these early years, the club changed their name to several variations including; Genoa Association Football Club (1893), Genoa Cricket & Football Club (1893–1907), and finally reverting back to their original name of Genoa Cricket & Athletic Club (1907–1909). In 1909 they reached the final of the newly formed Coppa Italia which they lost 2–1 against local rivals Sampierdarenese.
