The History of the Club

The Club was founded on November 9, 1903 in the city of Verona, Italy. The name “Hellas” was chosen because it was the name of the ancient Greek city where the club’s founders had grown up. The club has won 3 Serie A titles, 5 Coppa Italias and 1 Supercoppa Italiana. They are one of only three Italian teams to have won all three major European competitions (UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup/Europa League, and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup/UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup).

The club’s first ever match was played on December 8, 1903 against local rivals AC Milan. Hellas won the match 2-1 with goals from Giuseppe De Feo and Pietro Meneghini. The team went on to win their first ever league title in 1910-11. They defended their title the following season, but lost it in 1912-13. After World War I, the club won their third league title in 1919-20.

The 1930s were a successful decade for Hellas Verona as they won two more league titles in 1930-31 and 1932-33. They also reached the semi-finals of the 1934 FIFA World Cup, but lost to eventual champions Italy. After World War II, Hellas won another league title in 1947-48. However, they were unable to defend their title and lost it the following season.
