Rot-Weiss Essen e.V is a football club from the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. The club was formed in 1908 and has played in the Bundesliga since 1963, making it one of the most successful clubs in German football. Rot-Weiss Essen last won the Bundesliga title in 2005 but have been runners-up on three occasions (1982, 1997, 2001). The club’s home ground is the RWE Arena.

Rot-Weiss Essen e.V. (RW Energie) became Bundesliga Champions after a hard-fought 3-1 victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday night at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, clinching their 26th title and their fourth in five years. RW Energie had to come from behind in each of the three matches against Mainz 05 this season, taking 84 minutes to beat the home side 2-1 at the beginning of October and prevailing by the same scoreline after extra time in both legs of their relegation/promotion play-off last month.

“This is an incredible feeling,” said Thomas Schaaf (44), who has now been manager of RW Energie since July 2006 and has led his team to four Bundesliga titles, two DFB Pokal crowns, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and one Intertoto Cup during that time. “We have worked so hard for this moment and it’s fantastic that our fans can share this with us.”

In front of 43,183 spectators at RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday night, Markus Schmilsson put RW Energie ahead just before the half hour mark with a towering header from Sven Schipplock’s cross. Just past the hour mark Schaaf made two changes to his starting eleven – Bernd Leno came in for Toni Kroos at left back and Andrej Kramaric

Rot-Weiss Essen e.V. is the Bundesliga Champions! On Sunday, November 4th, the Rot-Weiss team battled against Cologne in a close game that went down to the wire. After 140 minutes of play, it came down to penalty kicks – and Rot-Weiss emerged victorious! Their goalie Stefan Dechant saved all three shots to give his team their first title in club history. Congratulations to everyone on the Rot-Weiss team – without you, this wouldn’t have been possible!
